1/21/18 - Reading "The Sound Effects Bible"
Started a new chapter today on what the author calls: "The Ten Recording Commandments". Today I just focused on the first one, which was all about ensuring that you have a couple of seconds of audio before and after the actual sound you're recording. Basically, just preparing your recording so you have enough material to make effective edits during post-production.
I perceive this also from a video perspective: have the camera roll for a few seconds before and after each take. I'd say I'm pretty good with both already, in fact probably a little too good on the after part as I tend to let it roll well after the take is done.
One new thing I learned though, which I don't yet have the capabilities for (maybe with my new mic, whenever I get it), is a thing called "pre-record buffer" that sounds really cool. Basically, the mic just keeps recording all the time while it's running (or maybe just after you hit a specific button, I don't know), but it doesn't actually commit all that to memory until you hit the regular record button (when you start to the hear the actual sound you want). It then provides you with a recording that starts 10 seconds or so BEFORE you even hit the record button! A really cool feature that I'll definitely want to try in the future.
